Interior design and Production
Metropole, a restaurant featuring Chinese cuisine, was opened in 1985 on TV Asahi Avenue in Roppongi. Nigel Coates, an English design professor known for avant-garde conceptual work, was commissioned to oversee the architectural design.
Sy Chen was the creative director and producer.
The unique character of this restaurant attracted a great deal of press and critical attention at the time.
From light fixtures to doorknobs, careful attention was paid to all details of the design, in order to create the atmosphere of an old English club house with a twist of industrial baroque.
The interior design was defined by its detailed craftsmanship and fused uniquely with Coates’ industrial baroque design.
With this project, the idea of concept and space production was introduced for the first time in Japan.
